How trading works
Every trade on the exchange follows the same six steps. Settlement completes three business days after the trade.
Your shares are held electronically in your own account at the central depository, opened through a broker or bank.
Brokers and investment banks place orders on the exchange for you, by phone, app or online portal.
Set the share, the quantity and a limit price. You can trade from a single share upwards.
Between 09:30 and 15:00 EAT the matching engine pairs buyers and sellers by price, then time.
Cash and shares change hands three business days after the trade, guaranteed by the depository.
Your holdings update and you receive dividends, bonus shares and rights directly.
Arithmetic
Brokerage, exchange, regulator and depository levies on any order, before you place it.
Net profit after fees and dividends, annualised return and the price you need to break even.
Gross and net dividends after withholding tax, and the yield on what you paid.
